Do philosophers hate women?  To find out, let’s perform a retrospective qualitative survey of the opinion of some philosophical figures of the past:

Aristotle: “The female state is a deformity.”
Kant: “I hardly believe that the fair sex is capable of principles.”
Schopenhauer: “Women are childish, silly and short-sighted, in a word big children, their whole lives long.”
Freud: “Woman is castrated man.”
Nietzsche: “Do not spare the whip for woman.”

Stop! Please! I thought philosophers were the revolutionaries of reason, the fearless vanguard of the coming paradigm who leave no stone unturned in the search for what is true and right! But it seems life up high in the ivory tower has pumped too much blood into their big bald heads, which have toppled, and left their enlightened intellects hidden under a patriarchal bushel. That bushel remains, and its effects are still being felt today, but a small few people are helping to burn it to an impotent dust.

And who are these people?

Here’s one of them! It’s David Pearce. He thinks “women-only” rule (gynocracy) could be the salvation of our species. Competitive alpha-male dominance is the result of the male sex inheriting the violent genetic predispositions written into the Y-chromosome and in the monoamine oxidase-A “warrior gene” that bristles in 1 in 3 men. If we could emasculate the patriarchy by modifying at least the latter allele, Pearce thinks we could save the world.

So when Mary Astell wondered why, “if all men are born free, how is it that all women are born slaves?” perhaps she only needed a Pearce to tell her that men are the ones enslaved, and were only waiting on the fairer sex to buckle up and show them just how wrong those hoary philosophers were.
